Elvis Saangs Lyrics
Are You Lonesome Tonight?
ganiboodewiz ina nango naakshig

  Are you lonesome tonight?

gidoo-mesin ina nango naakshig

  Do you miss me tonight?

gidoo-agiisaadendam ina agii-pake’idiying

Are you sorry we drifted apart?

g’makawendaan ina kawa kina gegoo agaa-izhi-nishing sa ngoding

Does your memory stray to a brighter summer day?

agii-ajaajiindiying miinawaa agii-zazaagi’idiying

When I kissed you and called you sweetheart?

bazhishi’agoote ina e-ji-biindigeng oowadi sa e-odaayin

Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare?

gidoo-ininaab ina shikawaandeming – gida-waabam ina zheye

Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there?

gidoo-gaagiiji’odeye ina aapiji – nidaa abi-piskaabii ina miinawaa

Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?

wiindamoowishin - ganiboodewiz ina nango naakshig

Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?

endigawenh ji-niboodewendang nango naakashig nida-ininendam

I wonder if you`re lonesome tonight

gawaya agii-akidowiba mamaanijii’anoong eta bimaadizing

You know someone said that the world`s a stage

kina gawaya teni awaa-ni-izhichiged

And each must play a part.

agiizhaa genii agii-zhinaagawad kiin awii-zaagi’inaa

Fate had me playing in love – with you as my sweet heart.

apii e-shiki-waabiminaa nigii-gikendaan zaagi’inaa

Act one was when we met, I loved you at first glance

aapiji kii-kikendaan awaa-izhi-yin awii-debawetoo’inaa

You read your line so cleverly and never missed a cue

miidash pakaan agii-maadijii-izhiwebag – pakaan kii-ni-azhayaa

Then came act two, you seemed to change, you acted strange

gaawiin n’gikendaziin ji

  And why I`ll never know.

kii-gaganiinawishik agii-akidoyin zaagi’i’yin

Honey, you lied when you said you loved me

miinawaa agaa gegoo ge-ji-aagawanetooninaambaa

And I had no cause to doubt you.

ooshime dash ninandawendaan ji-noondoonaambaa gaganiinawishkiyin

But I`d rather go on hearing your lies

apii dash ji-iyaasii’imba n’bimaadiziwining

Than to go on living without you.

nango dash kina gegoo agii-maadijaamigad nishike gawa nda-iyaa maampii

Now the stage is bare and I`m standing there

bizhishigoowendaagawad aapiji

  With emptiness all around

giishipin dash awii-abi-piskaabi’awiijiiwi’siwan

And if you won`t come back to me

ooshitibi gawa naa nidaa-booni-bimaadiz

Then they can bring the curtain down.

gidoo-gaagiiji’odeye ina aapiji – nidaa abi-piskaabii ina miinawaa

Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?

wiindamoowishin - ganiboodewiz ina nango naakshig Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?

David’s Notes:

(English songs are not to be literally translated, never ever, well almost never as you will see)

I laugh every time I hear just how pitiful this singer is…There is no reference to a “stage” or “bringing the curtain down” it is much sadder without those figures of speech.

Too Much

Note:

The “too much” just not provide enough meaning literally. Helen changed it and all of the figures of speech in the English lyrics of this song in order to make sense in Anishinaabemowin. Check out the “broken hearted”, which if this really happened to someone, he could not sing. He would be dead. So she says “hurt in the heart”, more or less.

Honey, I love you too much
aapiji gawa memdige g’zaagi’in
Need your lovin' too much
  ninandawendaan genii awii-zaagi’i’yin
Want the thrill of your touch

Don't you leave me broken hearted
awii-agaagiiji’odewiyaanh
Cause I love you too much
zaam aapiji gawa g’zaagi’in

Stuck on You

Note:

“Stuck on you” would not work as a literal translation. Don’t shake me is literally translated. It’s just funny, but it does not take on the figure of speech meaning of “never shake me” as in “get rid of me”. It really means don’t shake me off, literally, by grabbing me and shaking me as you might shake me off of you. As if I am clinging to you. It is just too funny…

mimaganaamad mishiimin mishiiminaatigoong
You can shake an apple off an apple tree
mimaganaam mishiimin
Shake-a, shake- sugar,
agaa mimaganaama’ike
But you'll never shake me
agaa ginigenh
Uh-uh-uh

nga-nanaazhi’aninjiitaa sa gamiinjisaang
Gonna run my fingers thru your long black hair

Squeeze you tighter than a grizzly bear

Uh-uh-uh
enh, mii gawa iwi, enh

Stuck on you

giishping gakizootawiyin jii’baayikawe’gamigoong
Hide in the kitchen, hide in the hall

Marie’s the Name

Note: Of course this is not literally translated.

The “love he just found” is the one he is going to be with. Her hair is spoken about in a way as an outstanding, changing feature of hers. Tears were not “a-burnin”…the gender problem has been solved too.

 n’wiiji’akiwenh agii-abi-izhaa nango
A very old friend came by today
kina gawayan oowedenaang agii-bibaa-wiindamawaan
'Cause he was telling everyone in town
agii-nakaweshikoowaad awaa-wiijiiwaajin
Of the love that he just found
Marie izhinikaazowan e-wiijiiwaajin
And Marie's the name of his latest flame

agii-bibaa-maadijimo - nigii-noondawaa akidod
He talked and talked and I heard him say
aapiji geyenh makadewaani-ikawenid
That she had the longest blackest hair

The prettiest green eyes anywhere
Marie izhinikaazowan e-wiijiiwaajin
And Marie's the name of his latest flame

aanawi gawa agii-baapi-yaanh geyaabi nigii-gagwaansagendam
Though I smiled the tears inside were a-burnin
nigii-bagoosendamoowaa kina gegoo ji-ni-minoo’asenig

geyaabi gawa nigii-naanoowandaan kina gegoo agaa-izhipa
He was gone but still his words kept returnin
miidash eta meshikawad agii-gichi-amoowi-yaanh
What else was there for me to do but cry

gidoo-debawetaan ina bajiinag ajiinaago
Would you believe that yesterday
niin agii-zaagi’id miinawaa agii-wiindamawid
This girl was in my arms and swore to me
niinwi pane ji-ni-bezhigoo-yaang
She'd be mine eternally
Marie izhinikaazowan e-wiijiiwaajin

Yeah Marie's the name of his latest flame
oonh, Marie izhinikaazowan e-wiijiiwaajin
Oh Marie's the name of his latest flame

Devil in Disguise

Note: “Looking like an angel” is looking like a mixed cultural reference, as well as a figure of speech. “Heaven help me” disappeared in the translation likewise.
The devil is still sort of in the details, though.

You look like an angel
aapiji gawa gida-ginaajiw
Walk like an angel
pane gawa gida-minoowadoodam
Talk like an angel
pane gida-miminoowaajim
But I got wise

You're the devil in disguise

Oh, yes, you are
enh - amii iwi e-aawi-yin
The devil in disguise

You cheated and you schemed
kii-awezham miinwaa kii-goopajiw
Heaven knows how you lied to me
nango n’gikendaan agii-giinawishiki-yin
You're not the way you seemed
  agaa gidaa-aawisii agaa-ineniminaa

You look like an angel aapiji gawa gida-ginaajiw
Walk like an angel pane gawa gida-minoowadoodam
Talk like an angel pane gawa gida-miminoowaajim
But I got wise miidash agii-nisadawaabindamaanh
You're the devil in disguise maji-maniwoodoo gegeti aawi-yin
Oh, yes, you are enh - amii iwi e-aawi-yin
The devil in disguise maji-maniwoodoo gida-aaw

I thought that I was in heaven
giizhigoong nida-iyaa ngii-inendam
But I was sure surprised
aapiji nigii-maamakaadendam
Heaven help me, I didn't see
agaa ginigenh nigii-waabindaziin

Walk like an angel

But I got wise
miidash agii-nisadawaabindamaanh
You're the devil in disguise
maji-maniwoodoo gegeti aawi-yin
Oh, yes, you are
enh - amii iwi e-aawi-yin

  maji-maniwoodoo gida-aaw

You're the devil in disguise

Oh, yes, you are
enh - amii iwi e-aawi-yin
The devil in disguise

Wooden Heart

Note:

The figure of speech “wooden heart” makes no sense in Anishinaabemowin. The heart is spoken about as what gives identity to a live being. Trying to speak about the heart as the source of love, in a poetic way, this figure of speech must mean “unfeeling” or unable to return the feeling called love.

Even the term “zaagi’idiwin” is not a literal translation of “love”. What is seen is something done by people in sharing an inner essence, a grouping action. Work with the sounds inside the words and you will come to a clearer understanding of the Anishinaabemowin words. Helen translated only some German.

Can't you see
  kikendaan na
I love you
azaagi’inaa
Please don't break my heart in two
gegawa wiisa’igi’odeyi’ike
That's not hard to do
gaa zanagisino awii-zhichigeng

Then I know that I would cry

Maybe I would die

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Note: The “rainbow” reference is gone. It is just not possible to go over a rainbow. And “troubles melting?” Dreams are wishes. “Blue skies” means everything is good, right? Wow, what a bunch of poetry.

nigoowaji oowadi gichi’awaa’asa’awang
Somewhere over the rainbow
gichi-ishipiming
Way up high,

nigii-noowandaanaaba nagamowaansing
There's a land that I heard of

bineshiinyag baatiini’awaad
Bluebirds fly.
giishipin bineshiinyag gishkitoowaad iwi
Birds fly over the rainbow.
aaniish dash genii ge-ji-gishkitoosiiyaambaa
Why then, oh why can't I?

giishipin bineshiinyag zhaawaad oowadi
If happy little bluebirds fly
oowadi e-ji-gichi’awaa’asa’awang
Beyond the rainbow
aaniish genii ge-ji-izhaasiiyaambaa
Why then, oh why can't I?
